Baby's First Game Day: What to Pack and Wear

Taking a baby to their first game is a big day for any sports family. It is also a long day for a very small person. A little planning goes a long way, so here is what to pack, what to dress them in and a few tips for keeping everyone happy until the final whistle.
Before you go
- Check the venue's bag policy. Many stadiums and arenas limit bag size or require clear bags, and some have exceptions for diaper bags. The venue's website will have the current rules.
- Pick seats on the aisle. Diaper changes and walks around the concourse are much easier when you are not climbing over a row of fans.
- Plan around naps. An afternoon game that lines up with nap time can work well if your baby sleeps in a carrier or on a lap.
- Bring ear protection. Crowds, horns and music get loud. Baby earmuffs are a common pick for games and concerts.
What to wear
Dress in layers, whatever the sport. Hockey rinks are cold, outdoor football in November is colder, and a sunny baseball afternoon can get warm fast.
- Base layer: a 'Cutest Fan' bodysuit ($19.99) in sizes NB through 24M, like the Lil' Stanley bodysuit for a night at the rink or the Lil' Paws bodysuit for the ballpark.
- Warmth: a beanie ($26.99) for cold rinks and fall football.
- Toddlers: a 'Let's Go' toddler tee ($22.99) in 2T through 6T, like the Lil' Hooper tee.
- Sun: for day games, a brimmed sun hat and shade breaks on the concourse.
What to pack
- Diapers, wipes and a changing pad
- A change of clothes, because something will spill
- A bib ($19.99) for snacks and celebrations
- A swaddle blanket ($44.99) to use as a blanket, a nursing cover or a quiet nap spot
- Bottles or snacks, plus a tumbler with straw ($21.99) for toddlers
- A sticker sheet ($12.99) for the slow innings
- Ear protection and a small toy
At the game
Arrive early so you can find the family restroom and settle in before the crowd. Plan to leave before the final buzzer if your little one has had enough. The first game is about the photo and the memory, not every play. And take the photo early, while the outfit is still clean.
