What Size Baby Clothes Should You Buy as a Gift?
Buying baby clothes for someone else's baby is harder than it looks. Babies grow fast, every brand fits a little differently, and the family may already have a drawer full of newborn outfits. Here is a simple way to pick a size you will not regret, plus a few gifts that skip the sizing question altogether.
The short answer: size up
If you are shopping for a baby shower and do not know the size to buy, go one or two sizes ahead. Newborn outfits get a lot of attention at showers, and many babies grow out of them within a few weeks. A 6M or 12M piece is the one the family will still be reaching for months from now.
- For a shower gift: 6M is a safe pick. 12M works if the family already has plenty of small sizes.
- For a baby who is already here: buy at least one size above what they wear today.
- For a toddler: ask what they wear now, then buy the same or the next size up.
Think about the season
A size is really a date. If the baby is due in spring, a 6M bodysuit fits around fall, which is right in the middle of football and hockey season. A 12M piece lands about a year out, in time for the next baseball opener. Matching the size to the season they will actually wear it in is the small detail parents notice.
